For one day, the Old Port Festival turned Portland’s downtown upside down.

Streets were closed to vehicles Sunday but they were still busy, loaded with pedestrians checking out artisan shops or tasting fried dough. WCSH-TV reported 50,000 people attended the festival.

The 43rd annual event started with its traditional puppet parade down Exchange Street at 11 a.m. but the action quickly spread to streets throughout the Old Port. Seven music stages hosted a variety of acts throughout the Old Port. There was a climbing wall and a bungee swing on Federal Street for children. Down the street was a Ferris wheel.

In all, there were more than 200 vendors selling art, food and crafts in the heart of Portland. By evening, the vendors and visitors were gone and the streets were reopened to vehicle traffic for another year.
