GRAY — After winning just four games a year ago, Kevin Fox knew his Wells High softball team would be better, just not how much better.

“We’re really young,” he said. “On the plus side there’s a lot of talent here. Sometimes we show the talent, sometimes we show the youth.”

The talent showed up Wednesday as ninth-seeded Wells used a pair of six-run innings to defeat eighth-seeded Gray-New Gloucester 12-5 in a Class B South prelim game.

Wells (11-6) will play at top-ranked York (15-1) in a quarterfinal at 4 p.m. Thursday. The teams played May 11 with York winning, 3-1.

Wells was able to get good at-bats against the Patriots and, said Fox, “that was the difference between a big inning and a two-, three-run inning.”

The bottom three hitters in the Wells lineup – Moody, Ally O’Brien and Casi Haye – combined for five hits, three RBI and three runs.

“Up and down the lineup we hit pretty well,” said winning pitcher Anya Chase, who struck out eight and didn’t walk anyone. “Everybody was up, everybody was on their game and it really just helped us to have that inning and win the game altogether.”

Fox knew his team had potential if it played well.

It was scoreless entering the top of the third when Wells broke loose, sending 10 batters to the plate. O’Brien led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Chase followed with a single and O’Brien scored on an error, with Chase going to second. She moved to third on an infield single by Karissa Kenyon, then scored on a wild pitch. Sara Ring followed with an RBI double.

Samantha Bogue lined a single off pitcher Allie Martel’s leg, putting runners on first and third. Ring then scored on another wild pitch.

Olivia Clay doubled in a run and Hannah Moody singled in the final run to make it 6-0.

“When you see the rest of the team get on base, you don’t want to leave anyone on base,” said Moody. “You want to do your part.”

Gray-New Gloucester got two in the bottom of the inning but left a runner at third after stranding two runners in the second.

“We just couldn’t find the hole when we needed it,” said Patriots Coach Amanda Harmon. “It was a little bit of a struggle. They connected with the ball and we couldn’t make the outs we needed to make.”

It was still 6-2 entering the top of the sixth when Wells again sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring six times.

Gray-New Gloucester committed four errors in the inning. Chase had an RBI double, Olivia Durfee an RBI single and Moody drove in two runs with a single.
