Surge pitch shutout to win Empire League debut
Alan Carey gave up just four hits and struck out six batters in eight innings to lead the Old Orchard Beach Surge to a 2-0 win over the Sullivan Explorers in an Empire League season opener on Friday night at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach.
The Surge scored both of their runs in the fourth inning. Chris Allen scored on an error after stealing two bases, and Jordyn Van Atta scored on an RBI double by Luc Pomales.
FOOTBALL
NFL: The suspect in the death of Will Smith said he shot him in self-defense, fearing for his life after the former New Orleans Saints star hit him several times and then went to get a gun.
“It was self-defense,” Cardell Hayes told detectives hours after a car crash led to angry words and gunfire.
One of those detectives, Tindell Murdock, testified that he saw no signs that Hayes was injured that night, but that he couldn’t prove otherwise.
A recording of the police interview was played in court Friday, along with a 911 recording made moments after the fatal shots in which Hayes tells an off-duty police officer that he had to shoot, because Smith was about to get a gun.
n Former Seattle Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman was charged with felony hit and run and vehicular assault for a car crash last October.
OLYMPICS
RIO GAMES: The World Health Organization’s chief has convened an expert committee to consider whether the Rio De Janeiro Olympics should proceed, given concerns about the threat of the Zika virus.
In a request in May, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen asked Dr. Margaret Chan to evaluate whether the Games should be postponed. Chan said in a letter released by Shaheen Friday that she had asked her Zika Emergency Committee to consider the issue.
n Ten refugee athletes from Africa and the Middle East were selected to compete under the Olympic flag in Rio in what the IOC called a “symbol of hope” for migrants and refugees around the world.
The members of the first ever Olympic refugee team come from South Sudan, Syria, Congo and Ethiopia and will compete in track and field, swimming and judo.

INDIAN WELLS: Tennis pro Tommy Haas was hired as tournament director of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, replacing Raymond Moore, who quit in March after making controversial comments about female players.
COLLEGES
FIELD HOCKEY: Colby College named Kelly Terwilliger head coach. Terwilliger was an associate head coach at Indiana University last season and was previously an assistant at Ohio State and Ohio University.
BASEBALL: Vanderbilt freshman pitcher Donny Everett drowned Thursday while fishing in Tennessee. He was 19.
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement Friday that Everett was with two teammates and two other people when he tried to swim across Normandy Lake near a bridge. Divers found Everett 15 feet from the shore.

FIFA INVESTIGATION: The governing body revealed that disgraced former officials Sepp Blatter, Jerome Valcke and Markus Kattner awarded themselves raises and World Cup bonuses totaling $80 million over their last five years in office.
Some of the contracted payments appear to break Swiss law, and evidence will be given to American and Swiss federal prosecutors.
