Festival on Bacon Street

The Bacon Street Neighborhood Festival will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday. The festival, part of National Night Out, is open to everyone and is free.

Last year, nearly 600 people turned out. This year’s event features music, an exotic animal exhibit, pony rides by Mustang Rescue, games, food, bouncy houses, arts and crafts, costumed characters, pie- and cupcake-eating contests, a dunk tank and more.

Animal-encounter program

The Blandings Park Wildlife Sanctuary is presenting “A Wildlife Adventure: The Ultimate Animal Encounter” at 6:45 p.m. Monday at the Biddeford Pool Community Club.

Two wellness workshops

Two free creative wellness workshops, linking creativity and good health and good life, will be held in the next two weeks.

The Art HOPE Sea Water Studio will be held 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday on Ogunquit Beach, teaching fresh-air watercolor techniques. A creativity retreat will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 7 at Waterfall Arts in Montville.

Plein-air painting classes

Exploritas and Tidewater Adventures of Maine host “Watercolors on the Coast of Maine,” a plein-air painting adventure, Sunday through Aug. 5.

Susan Tobey White of High Street Studio and Gallery will teach the workshop with one-on-one instruction in both the classroom and plein-air settings. Enrollment is limited. A second workshop will be held Sept. 5-9. To sign up, contact Judy Gannon at 323-4857.

Photography at Riverbend

The Southern Maine Photography Show will open at the Riverbend Gallery on Friday, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

The juried exhibit will be on display Monday through Sept. 17, with 50 images by 23 southern and central Maine photographers.

T-Bone adventure at library

T-Bone’s Tropical Adventure is returning to the Kennebunk Free Library at 6:30 p.m. today in the library garden.

The show promotes reading and combines a childhood love of “Treasure Island” and “Swiss Family Robinson.”

SOUTH BERWICK

Charity home-run derby

A home-run derby starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at Marshwood High School will support local families participating in the two-day Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in New York City in October.

Registration for the derby is a suggested $10 per batter. For donations of $25 or more, participants will receive a T-shirt. All batters will also receive an entry into a batter-only prize raffle.

Art show on the causeway

The Naples for the Arts Show and Sale will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, with a rain date Sunday.

The works of more than 80 artists will be displayed in booths set up along Long Lake’s causeway. All money raised from the festival will be donated to the Clyde Bailey Center’s Capital Campaign.

Dennis Lehane appearance

Best-selling author Dennis Lehane will appear at Thornton Academy at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a presentation and book signing.

Lehane is author of “Mystic River,” “Gone, Baby, Gone” and “Shutter Island.” His most recent novel is “The Given Day.”

The event benefits local and international charities, primarily Safe Passage, and is part of Union Church’s Summer Speaker Series, now in its ninth season.

Open house at library

The Camden Public Library is hosting an open house through Saturday.

After a donation of $25,000 from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, the library was able to refresh the space and wants the community to see the work.

FRIENDSHIP

Wet-paint auction for artists

The town will be celebrating artists as part of Friendship Day on Saturday.

Artists are invited to bring their easels from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and participate in a wet-paint auction starting at 4 p.m. at the Hahn Center. All mediums may be included, but the work must be able to be displayed on an easel that the artist provides.
