Maine State Police arrested two men on cocaine and heroin charges Monday after their car was stopped along Route 202 in Alfred.

State police said a car driven by Ryan Benoit, 25, of Bridgton sped off after being stopped by police.

The car was found a short time later in a driveway. When Trooper James MacDonald approached the vehicle, he arrested Benoit after brief struggle, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state police.

After being put in the back seat of MacDonald’s cruiser, Benoit, who was handcuffed behind his back, unbuckled the seat belt and fled. He was caught within seconds. In the meantime, state troopers, state drug agents and a York County sheriff’s deputy arrived.

Also arrested was Donald Wintermute, 29, of Sanford.

Police say they found a loaded 9 mm handgun, 25 grams of cocaine and 10 grams of heroin, all of which fell on the ground during Benoit’s scuffle with the trooper.

Both men were charged with aggravated drug trafficking. Benoit was also charged with violation of probation, possession of a firearm, escape, resisting arrest, eluding an officer, and driving after license suspension.

The men were held in the York County Jail.
