SCARBOROUGH – Beloved husband, father and Bampee, Jim passed away Oct. 28, 2025. He was born in Westbrook, where he attended Westbrook High School. Jim worked at S.D. Warren as a crane operator then started The Carpet Barn in Westbrook with Ron Danie where Jim created “The Rug Bug” with a Volkswagen Beatle, then started his own carpeting business American Installation where he retired. There was nothing Jim couldn’t do, from carpet installation, custom kitchens, stained glass art. With the help of his sons and a few friends he built the family camp in Stratton, where he enjoyed spending time with friends and family skiing and snowmobiling. eventually, Jim and Elaine converted the camp to a bed-and-breakfast, which they ran successfully for years, making many new friends who came back year after year.

Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years Elaine Collins Poitras, son Timothy Poitras, son Gary Poitras, his wife Sheila Verrill, son Brian Poitras, his wife Beth O’Gara, son Kevin Poitras and his wife Kelli Wormell Poitras, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2025, from 1-5 p.m. at Mariner’s Church Banquet Center, 368 Fore Street, Portland.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude for the kind compassionate care Jim received at Maine Medical Center, and the Gosnell House in Scarborough.
