Carlo I. Viitala
HARRISON – Carlo I. Viitala, 96, of Harrison, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025, in the comfort of what was his home in Harrison for over 95 years.
He was born in Otisfield on Jan. 25, 1929, the son of Ivar and Agda (Hoglund) Viitala. He attended local schools, graduating from Bridgton High School in 1947. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
On May 6, 1961, he married Glenys Tripp in West Poland and they settled in South Harrison on the family farm where he worked his entire life. There was a period of 30 years from 1977 to 2007 when he also worked as a custodian for the Windham School Department, predominantly Windham High School.
Carlo loved traveling and was proud to have visited the birthplace of his parents in Finland. He enjoyed old-time country dances with Glenys and the company of his family. He was the Boston Post Cane recipient in Harrison in March of 2024. Interestingly, he was the fourth person from South Harrison to have received the Boston Post Cane.
He is survived by his son, Lars Viitala of Harrison, his daughter, Randa Viitala of Harrison; a sister, Nancy Kirkpatrick of Wyalusing, Pa.; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Glenys on March 2, 2022; sisters Doris Hall, Anne Lowell, Edna Wiley, Lida Brackett, and an infant brother, Kenneth.
Memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Rd. in Casco. Condolences and tributes may be shared at http://www.hallfuneralhome.net. Carlo’s family would like to thank the CNA and RNs of Andwell Home Health and Hospice for their care and support.
