The Westbrook High School football team will move on to postseason play after winning the first River Bowl on its home field, defeating Gorham in a squeaker, 12-10, on Oct. 24. Bleachers on both sidelines were packed and some fans were left to stand.
The River Bowl is a new name for the annual game played between the two rival teams during the regular season. Coaches from the teams collaborated with the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary to create a trophy.

Eden Ayers, of Westbrook High School’s Interact Club, sponsored by Westbrook-Gorham Rotary, presented the River Bowl trophy to a jubilant Westbrook coach Sam Johnson. Then, Johnson ran onto the field to join his celebrating players.
Andre Hicks was named Westbrook’s most valuable player and Atticus Whitten received the honor for Gorham.
Next year, the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary-sponsored event will be played on Gorham turf.
