Harriet “Happy”
Langmaid Bradford
SCARBOROUGH – Harriet “Happy” Langmaid Bradford, 89, died peacefully in her sleep after an illness on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2025. She was born on April 16, 1936 in Portland, Maine to John F. Langmaid, Jr. and Dorothea Ware Langmaid.
She graduated from the Waynflete School in Portland and Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. Happy married Cary Knight Bradford in 1959 and raised three daughters in Waterville, Maine.
Happy spent her career in early childhood education which included kindergarten teacher, Title I tutor, running an in-home nursery school, and director of a small elementary school. She was very involved in the Waterville community, helping to organize the first Earth Day celebration; volunteering at the homeless shelter; and participating in other community activities/organizations. Upon Cary’s retirement, they moved to Belfast, Maine where they spent 20 years immersed in the close-knit community. Happy was involved in many community activities during her time in Belfast. She and Cary were longtime members of the Unitarian Universalist Church in both Waterville and Belfast. In 2019, they moved to Topsham, Maine to be closer to their daughters and their families. Happy loved the outdoors and grew up sailing and skiing, which continued for many years. She also enjoyed spending time in her garden.
Happy was predeceased by her husband Cary, her brother Jack Langmaid, and her sister Charty Hunter. She is survived by her daughters, Ann Bradford de Cifuentes (Julio), Julie Bradford Wheeler (Derek), and Betsy Bradford; her grandchildren, Madeleine and Benjamin Wheeler; her sister Nancy Loth (Richard), her sister-in-law Chartis Tebbetts (Ned), her brother-in-law David Hunter; her nephews Bill and Jamie Langmaid, her nieces Tanya and Alison Miller, their families; and several cousins.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring.
