ALFRED — An Old Orchard Beach man was sentenced last week to serve 15 months for a drunken driving car crash in 2013 in Arundel that killed his friend.

Brian Roche, 33, pleaded guilty on Nov. 9 in York County Superior Court in Alfred to felony charges of manslaughter and operating under the influence resulting in the death of 26-year-old Bobby Hem of Sanford.

Justice John O’Neil Jr. sentenced Roche to serve 15 months of an eight-year sentence. The judge suspended the remaining 81 months of the sentence, but ordered Roche to serve a four-year probation term after completion of his prison sentence. O’Neil also ordered Roche to pay a $2,100 fine.

Roche was driving a white 2002 BMW west on Log Cabin Road in Arundel on Oct. 26, 2013, near the Seashore Trolley Museum just before midnight when he came to a curve in the road, lost control on the wet surface and hit a utility pole, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Wires were dangling around the vehicle when deputies arrived, police said at the time.

Hem, the lone passenger in the vehicle, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. He died from head injuries, according to police.

Hem worked as the sous-chef at One Dock at the Kennebunkport Inn, where Roche served as the executive chef.
