A Biddeford man was charged with aggravated operating under the influence following a crash Sunday in Woolwich that seriously injured a woman and closed Route 1 for more than three hours.

Police say the 33-year-old man was driving a Ford F-150 south on Route 1 near Weston Road when he crossed the centerline and hit an oncoming Toyota 4Runner around 6 p.m. The pickup truck careened off the road and the Toyota was spun into a breakdown lane, according to Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry.

The driver of the Toyota, a 71-year-old woman from Round Pond, was seriously injured and had to be extricated. She was taken by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland, Merry said.

The pickup truck driver had minor injuries and was treated at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

He was charged with aggravated operating under the influence with serious bodily injury, a felony. He is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail on $10,000 cash bail and will be arraigned later this week, Merry said.

Route 1 reopened to traffic at 9:30 p.m.
