Philip Po
BRUNSWICK – The family of Philip Po is saddened to announce his passing at the age of 87 on Sept. 21, 2025, in Lewiston. He had moved from New York to Maine in late 2024, and in the days preceding his death, he was surrounded by his family.
Philip arrived in New York City, N.Y. in the late 1970s with his late wife, Helen, and his toddler daughter, Cicy. There, he forged a new path for his family, working in the import/export industry and learning better English along the way. He built a social community of friends in place of the large family left behind. The fast pace and high energy of the bustling city reminded him of his birthplace, Hong Kong.
In his youth, he chose to work for the airlines to pursue his dreams of travelling the world. He was also an avid soccer player, and was delighted that his grandson took after his love for the sport. During his five decades in Brooklyn, Long Island, and Queens, N.Y., he was an active participant in the Chinese American communities – leading karaoke parties, ballroom dancing, and helping the elderly with their taxes. Throughout his life, Philip was eager to meet new people and catch up with old friends; it didn’t matter if you were a friend or a stranger – he would gift you with a smile, good humor, and give you a laugh before parting ways. He also loved to swim at the YMCA, take long strolls in the city parks, and treat his family to dim sum in Chinatown.
Philip is survived by son-in-law, Frederik Schuele; grandchildren Sophie Schuele and Emmet Schuele; and his daughter, Cicy Po. They will remember him for his optimism, generosity, and joyful spirit. We are so grateful that Philip’s daring life choices and hard work granted the gift of living the beautiful life we now have.
The family will memorialize his death privately, and he will be interred at Lunt Cemetery in Brunswick, alongside his wife, Helen Po.
