Eleanor Marie Mitchell

SCARBOROUGH – Eleanor Marie Mitchell entered eternal rest passing peacefully on Sept. 29, 2025, surrounded by family.

Born in Portland, on Dec. 21, 1933, Eleanor grew up blessed by faith, family, and tradition.

Guided throughout her life by strong Catholic devotion, she lived each day with kindness, humility, and gratitude.

She was a weekly communicant, a faithful member of Holy Cross Church, and always prayed morning and evenings with her rosary.

Her Irish spirit was ever present – joyful in song and dance, warm in hospitality, and committed in love for family and friends.

Eleanor enjoyed traveling, starting at the very young age of 8-months old. In 1934 she made her first trip to Ireland with her mother, to visit the family farm in the Isle of Doagh, County Donegal. Her mother was one of 14 children and was raised in Ireland before crossing over to America.

Eleanor returned to Ireland several times during her life. This included a trip in 1938 with her brother Jack, and sister Grace, and many trips after.

Eleanor and her sisters looked forward to the weekend dances they would all attend during the 60’s and 70’s, which introduced her to Clarence Mitchell, a dance partner who became her husband for 49 years.

Eleanor and Clarence enjoyed years together traveling with family and friends on cruise ships and trips around the country.

Eleanor enjoyed her summers at Nason Beach, Sebago where they set up camp and enjoyed eating all the fish Clarence hooked.

Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Clarence; brothers, Jack and Daniel Sullivan; sister, Grace Sullivan, and nephew, Brian Sullivan. She is survived by a sister, Joanne Bodman and husband Walter; several nephews, Michael, Brian and Charles Bodman, John, Steve, Dan, and Chris Sullivan; several nieces, Terry Bodman, Debbie (Sullivan) Peterson, Donna (Sullivan) Thorpe, Karen (Sullivan) Hannigan, Mary (Sullivan) Straw.

A funeral service will be held on Friday October 3, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland, 1024 Broadway. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland, Maine. To view Eleanor’s memorial page or to share an online condolence, please visit http://www.ConroyTullyWalker.com.
