Post 62 opens meeting season

Dennis Marrotte, immediate past commander of American Legion Post 62, reported that its first business meeting of the year opened with a “Draping of the Post Charter” ceremony in honor and memory of Roger Barr and David Berry.

Barr and Berry were U.S. Air Force veterans and longtime officers and members of the post. The ceremony was performed by post Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Thomas and Scott Barr.

In the program, guest speakers Julia Smythe and Nancy Dean of the Daughters of the American Revolution spoke about its history and work.

Presumpscot programs benefit dinner

The Three Sisters Harvest Dinner is scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Conant Homestead, 89 Conant St., Westbrook. Proceeds from the event, sponsored by Friends of Presumpscot River, will benefit the organization’s programs and river restoration efforts.

The menu includes Three Sisters Harvest stew served in squash bowls, cornbread, grilled chicken, fruit cobblers, soft drinks, beer and wine. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are available. Suggested donation is $60.

Carolyn Shapiro in concert

Carolyn Shapiro, a self-described “old-time” banjo player and singer-songwriter, will perform in concert at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19, at Conant Homestead, 89 Conant St., Westbrook. Suggested donation is $15-$20. Grounds open at 6 p.m. The homestead features goats, chickens, gardens and a walk to the Presumpscot River.

50 years ago

The American Journal reported on Sept. 17, 1975, that Scott Van Orman had transferred to the S.D. Warren paper mill in Muskegon, Michigan, to become plant energy supervisor. It was similar to his position at the mill in Westbrook.
