RAYMOND – Jane A. Hubbell, 89, of Raymond, died at home in her sleep on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025.
Daughter of Francis Arlyn (Quarles) Graham and Frederick McCall Graham, Jane was born on Oct. 25, 1935, in the Bronx, NYC. She graduated from Memphis High School and Lindenwood College for Women in Saint Charles, Mo. It was at a college dance that she almost decided not to attend, where she met the love of her life, Thomas Walker Hubbell.
Prior to retiring to Raymond in 1990, Jane volunteered in soup kitchens and schools, served on the local school board, was a part-time substitute teacher, and raised three children. Once her children were in high school and college, she attained her master’s degree from the University of Rochester. For several years, she was a part-time adjunct professor at a local community college, teaching writing and English literature.
In Raymond, Jane volunteered for the Raymond Village Library (now the Town Library) and was involved in the library’s annual plant sale. With her husband, she divided plants from her extensive gardens to give to the sale. At 75 State Street in Portland, she served on the volunteer board and helped plan events for the residents. She loved her many friends who helped at the library, played bridge, went for walks on local trails and the beaches, and gathered together for lunch. Being an avid reader, she was most fond of Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick and the owners, Gary Lawless and Beth Leonard, who always had a ready hug and book recommendation for her. She loved treating family and friends to the sandwiches at Goodlife Market in Raymond, owned by her friends Linda and Walt Manchester. And mostly, Jane loved her annual anniversary trip to Acadia National Park with Tom, walking Maine’s beaches with him, and sharing his life.
Jane is remembered with great love, respect, and gratitude by her daughter, Jocelyn, son, Graham; sister, Franny Purcell, of Boaz, Ky., and brother, Mac Graham, of Chloride, Ariz.
She was predeceased by her husband, Tom; and daughter, Arlyn J. Hubbell.
There will be no services, and the burial will be held at the convenience of the family. A gathering honoring Jane’s life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations in Jane’s name to the Raymond Town Library and Raymond Fire & Rescue, or the Maine State Park of your choice.
