Heads-up drivers for a culvert replacement
The Maine Department of Transportation announced that Mitchell Bridge on Mitchell Hill Road, at the town line between Gorham and Scarborough, will close starting Sept. 3 for up to 45 days for a culvert replacement project.
There will be signs for a detour route that uses Holmes, Beech Ridge, County (Route 22) and Burnham roads. MDOT officials said the anticipated completion date for this project is Oct. 24. T. Buck Construction Inc., of Turner, is the contractor and cost of the project is $940,000.
Art on South Saturday
Gorham Village Alliance will host its annual Art on South from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Preble Street Common, at the corner of South and Preble streets. Admission is free.
Local artists will display their work including paintings, photography and pottery. Matt Paul will provide live music and Cheeky Geek will offer face painting.
Historians to meet
Gorham Historical Society will meet at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, in the Mosher Barn on Cherry Hill Road, off Main Street.
Suzanne Phillips, society president, said a theme for the 2026 calendars will be discussed.

Municipal nomination papers due soon
Completed nomination papers for elected town positions are due by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, in the Town Clerk’s office at the Municipal Center, 75 South St.
Seats available are three Town Council for three-year terms; two School Committee, three-year terms; and one School Committee, one-year term.

The American Journal reported on Sept. 3, 1975, that a Gorham traffic study included mass transit. The first question was aimed at how to solve traffic congestion in Gorham Village.
