A great white shark was spotted about 200 yards off Little Beach in Ogunquit on Tuesday.
The “credible sighting,” according to the Ogunquit Fire Department, of the 6- to 8-foot great white shark took place near the mouth of a small river north of the beach Tuesday morning.
“This is a reminder that our ocean is the natural home of sharks,” the fire department said in a Facebook post. “We want the public to be aware of today’s sighting, and we are actively monitoring the area for any additional activity.”
A yellow flag was being flown at the beach on Tuesday, urging beachgoers to use caution if they were to enter the water.
“Please use caution, follow posted advisories, and check in with lifeguards if you have any questions,” the department said.
The shark sighting in Ogunquit on Tuesday was one of a handful of reported in southern Maine this month. A shark was spotted Aug. 1 near Mother’s Beach in Kennebunk. Last week, a shark was spotted near beaches in Scarborough and was caught on camera by a drone. More sightings were reported near beaches in Kennebunk and Ogunquit.
