Elevated bacteria advisories for five Maine beaches that had prompted warnings from officials were all dropped by Thursday evening.

Advisories for Little Beach and Riverside Beach in Ogunquit were dropped around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, according to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s Healthy Beaches Portal.

Similar advisories for Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Higgins Beach in Scarborough and Laite Beach in Camden were dropped earlier Thursday.

Beachgoers had been advised not to make contact with the water while such advisories were in place.

On Wednesday, Little, Riverside and Higgins beaches all tested higher than Maine’s safety threshold for enterococci bacteria.

Enterococci bacteria, which come from the intestinal tracts of warm-blooded animals, can indicate contamination from fecal matter.
