Thanks and kudos to the Press Herald for the Live Nation music venue coverage. The debate presents hard trade-offs. Mostly missing from the coverage (and the heated debates) is what should most drive City Council’s decision making: What will help revive downtown Portland?
When I moved to Maine 14 years ago, Congress Street and downtown Portland were a joy and a beauty to visit. Today, that part of town is a shadow of its former self, with empty storefronts and trash. I don’t know whether a new music venue would alleviate or magnify the peninsula’s decline. I urge decision makers to ask these questions and make an informed decision about what is best for reversing our downtown’s decline.
