River Arts will host a one-day wet felting workshop with Maine fiber artist Laura McNelly from 1-4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the gallery, 36 Elm St., Damariscotta. Participants in this workshop will learn the art of wet felting while crafting a vibrant sunflower piece under McNelly’s guidance.

McNelly, a former teacher and floral designer, was introduced to felting when she began volunteering at a local school and for a group of homeschoolers. She began her pursuit of felting through online classes and other online resources to hone her skills and techniques. McNelly finds inspiration for her pieces in her surroundings: from an ocean vista, a view across the blueberry barrens or flowers by the roadside. She enjoys incorporating her collection of yarns, silks and vintage laces into art pieces and wearables as well.

“Felting is the process of using wool and specialty fibers to create works of art,” McNelly said in a prepared release.

Class fees are $50 for River Arts members and $60 for non-members, with a $10 materials fee payable directly to the instructor. Space is limited to just six students. Visit riverartsme.org/current-upcoming-events-exhibitions/ for more information and the sign-up sheet.
