A fire took place in Windham in the early hours of Tuesday, July 29, requiring assistance from fire departments across Cumberland County.

According to a press release from the Windham Fire Department, units were dispatched at 12:56 a.m. to the area of 209 Tandberg Trail to combat a fully involved structure fire. The first unit arrived at 1:04 a.m. and confirmed that a single-family ranch-style home was fully involved, which led to a second alarm being called in order to bring in additional resources. The crews worked to extinguish the fire with their mutual aid partners and reported that the fire was under control within 45 minutes.

Due to the warm temperatures and high humidity additional crews were called in to allow for adequate rehab of firefighters. The crews included firefighters from Standish, Raymond, Falmouth, Gorham, Cumberland, Westbrook and New Gloucester. The Windham Police Department and the Cumberland County Sherriff’s Office also responded, with units from Naples and Cumberland performing station coverage.

Brent Libby, Windham’s fire chief, said the second alarm had initially called in units to cover stations while the department was extinguishing the blaze, but as the units on the scene were getting hot and tired, they moved up some of those crews to the fire to provide additional personnel to rotate through in the oppressive conditions.

Units on the scene quickly confirmed there was no one inside the home, and no injuries were reported. While Libby told Lakes Region Now there were some remnants of structures remaining at the site of the home, the property is a total loss, and the residents will be staying with family members.

Libby said that the cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to be an electrical problem and not suspicious.
