Peter D. Watson
SCARBOROUGH – Peter D. Watson, 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and engineer, passed away peacefully June 28, 2025, surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of love, quiet strength, and steady curiosity.
Peter was raised in West Gorham, and carried the values of his small-town upbringing throughout his life—integrity, humility, and a hands-on approach to every challenge. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. His time in the U.S. Navy further shaped his sense of service, discipline, and dedication, and love of boating. He then embarked on a successful career for over 30 years with Northeast Utilities. Peter volunteered his time throughout his life serving in various community and church roles. In his retirement he volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and the Maine Maritime Museum Boat shop.
Peter is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Joann Merritt. They raised their family in Essex, Conn. and enjoyed time spent in Maine at Panther Pond. They later moved to Maine and lived in Harpswell, Brunswick, and Westbrook. Known for his constant tinkering and creativity, Peter could often always be found in the garage or the basement, tools or paintbrush in hand and mind at work.
He is lovingly remembered by his son, Andrew (Maggie) and daughter, Nora (Roberto); as well as his cherished grandchildren, Jack, Leila, and Finn. Whether sharing quiet wisdom, teaching practical skills, or simply offering a steady presence, Peter was a source of unwavering support to those he loved.
A private family gathering will be held to celebrate a life well lived and deeply loved.
In lieu of flowers,
the family requests that donations be made in Peter’s memory to the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust or the Maine Maritime Museum.
