The Flat Iron Coffee Bar, a European-style café located at 594 Congress St., is set to open next week. Tucked beneath the Pearl Gallery in the historic Flatiron building the space promises a refreshing take on the coffeehouse experience.

These days, many coffee shops have turned into spots for laptops and lingering work sessions, but the Flat Iron Coffee Bar has taken a different approach. The coffeeshop, which is owned by Rhonda Pearle and Gary Perlmutter, will embrace conversation, art and community, they said. With no Wi-Fi, a limited number of tables and a cozy 10 to 12 seat bar, the café encourages customers to engage with each other and the baristas behind the counter while enjoying espresso drinks, energy spritzes, pastries and gelato.

Instead of outlets, visitors will find rotating exhibitions from local artists, including Rwandan painter Frederick Ndabaramiye, and organizations like Shalom House. Perlmutter, an artist known for his work with natural light, will also be painting live in the front window, turning the café into a working studio.

The Flat Iron Coffee Bar will be open daily, beginning Monday  from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with extended hours during Portland’s First Friday Art Walks.
