Raymond N. Libby
BRUNSWICK – Raymond N. Libby, 77, passed away suddenly at his home in Brunswick on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
He was born in Portland to Orrin G. and Hilda Nelson Libby on March 6, 1948. He was raised in Raymond and graduated from Windham high school and the University of Maine at Orono with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education.
Music was the defining passion of Ray’s life. His long career included teaching instrumental music for the Maine Youth Orchestra, being an elementary and high school music teacher in Brunswick, Lewiston, Illinois, and Oxford Hills, a mentor, manager of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, and a professional musician, whose primary instrument was the clarinet. His innumerable professional connections and relationships made him a pillar and an asset to the greater Maine musical community.
Ray was most recently participating in the Maine Pops Band, the Hallowell Community Band, the Harpswell Concert Band, Chandler’s Band, and the Volunteers Jazz Band. He has played for many decades in Casco Bay Wind Symphony. He has also music directed and played in countless high school and professional theater productions over his long legendary career.
His sterling character, faith and integrity was evident throughout his countless music
involvements and at his church where he served as a deacon for the past 20 years.
He was a great story teller and regaled us with wonderful and hilarious stories of his college days and extensive travels with music students to competitions from Disney World to Toronto and in between, He was consistently good-natured and thought the best of everyone he met. He had a deep fondness for all animals, especially for his beloved dog and cat.
Ray and his wife, Jean of 22 years, travelled from Mexico to Washington State, and many times to California to visit his wonderful sons and families. He marveled at the accomplishments of all of his children and grandchildren and loved them all dearly.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Skelton Libby, his two sons of California, Christopher Libby, and Geoffrey Libby and his wife Jaime and granddaughters, Hattie and Tilly, his stepdaughter, Evelyn Barbour, stepson Jeremy Skelton and his wife Abby and stepgrandchildren, Noah and Eleanor.
