Mae Irma (Pottle) DeWitt

BRUNSWICK – Mae Irma (Pottle) DeWitt, 86, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025 in Brunswick.

Irma was born March 5, 1939, in Perry. She was the youngest of five children, born to Eder F. and Lucy Sherman Pottle. She grew up happily in the Eastport area and graduated from Shead Memorial High School in 1956.

As a 14-year-old she has started her working career helping her mother at the telephone switchboard located on their porch at the house in Perry.

Irma was predeceased by her loving husband, William T. DeWitt; her brothers Raymond, Charles and David, as well as sister, Anne Bowden.

Irma is survived by her devoted son, Michael D. DeWitt and his wife Kathryn S. DeWitt. “Aunt Irma” leaves behind many nieces and nephews spanning three generations.

Always the center of her large and loving family. Irma brought them all together time after time.

As an Airforce wife she traveled with her husband and son to many places including Germany and Kansas over Bill’s 22-year career. They retired to Brunswick in 1975, where she worked for the town school department doing payroll for 35 years.

Irma loved traveling, especially cruises, road trips, and the many trips home to Eastport for the 4th of July and other occasions. She also loved lobster rolls and Elvis Presley. Entertaining friends and family was always a highlight for her. She never missed a birthday or celebration. Irma was dearly loved by so many and will be missed forever.

Friends and family are invited to visit 5-7 p.m. Monday July 7, 2025, at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday July 8, 2025, at First Parish Church, Brunswick. Interment will be in Maine Veterans Cemetery, August next to her husband.
