
Luncheonette, a small daytime cafe on Cumberland Avenue in Portland, is scheduled to open for business on Thursday.
The restaurant, located on 147 Cumberland Ave. in a space formerly occupied by Union Bagel, channels the feel of a New York City deli, with a glass case containing pies, countertop seating and hand-painted exterior sign, as a nod to chefs Angela Lee and Alex LeBlanc’s culinary connections to the city.
The menu specializes in small salads and sandwiches, which are meant to encourage diners to sample multiple dishes. Options like the Cabbage “Caesar” and miso mushrooms with Maine kelp are more akin to vegetable dishes than traditional salads, reflecting a meze or tapas-style approach, the pair said. Luncheonette serves coffee, kombucha, beer and wine.
The two have incorporated Asian flavors and ingredients throughout the menu. Lee highlighted the gluten-free red bean cake and the mushrooms as homages to her Korean heritage. “It’s not overt, but that’s the flavors we love,” LeBlanc said. “So, like, how do we sneak them in everywhere?”
Lee and LeBlanc source their ingredients from Maine farms and producers, including Stonecipher Farm in Bowdoinham; Peak Season, a Maine-based company that brings local farm produce to restaurants and institutions; and Maine Grains in Skowhegan.
While the indoor space is small, in season the backyard patio – which seats 20 – opens Luncheonette up for diners to enjoy their meal outside. The restaurant is open Thursdays to Mondays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
