Betty L. Calderwood

AUBURN – Betty L. Calderwood, a cherished resident of New Marble Head Manor in Windham, and most recently Clover Manor in Auburn, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025, at the age of 96. Born on April 20,1929, in Augusta, Maine. She was the beloved daughter of Ernest and Mildred (LittleJohn) Hawes.

On May 31,1947, Betty married the love of her life, Ralph L. Calderwood. They shared many wonderful years together until Ralph’s passing on Dec. 2, 1980.

A devout Christian, Betty dedicated her life to God, finding immense joy in sharing her faith with others. Known for her remarkable sense of humor, she had a unique talent for writing poems, crafting jokes, and bringing laughter to those around her. She loved taking walks through town, engaging in cheerful conversations, and spreading God’s word with everyone she met. Betty also found great joy in baking while singing hymns, with her peanut butter fudge being a favorite among family and friends.

Betty’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to Catholic Charities of Maine for their support over the years. A special thank you goes to Donna Johnston and Richard J. Fickett for their profound love and dedicated care. Betty affectionately referred to Richard as her adopted grandson.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy Grovo, and her son, Andrew Calderwood. She also leaves behind a treasured legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. Betty shared a particularly close bond with her grandson, David Velilla, with whom she spent countless cherished moments. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael, in 2011.

Betty’s loving spirit, vibrant faith, and infectious laughter will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A visitation for Betty will be held Monday, June 16, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland, ME 04103. A committal service will occur Tuesday, June 17, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at West Buxton Cemetery.
