The 44th annual Westbrook Together Days, promising plenty of fun, is on tap for this weekend and event Chair Suzanne Joyce was honored June 2.
The event will feature a parade, live bands, auction, amusement rides and food. The schedule is set to go on Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7, at Riverbank Park on Main Street. This year’s theme is, “We are Westbrook.”
Joyce, president of the Westbrook-Gorham Community Chamber of Commerce, leads a group of volunteers that make the event possible. Westbrook Mayor David Morse June 2 presented Joyce with the city’s Spirit of America Award that honors and encourages volunteerism.
“Sue Joyce is the embodiment of the spirit of volunteerism here in Westbrook,” Morse said in a presentation at the regular City Council meeting.
A surprised Joyce was emotional in accepting the award.
“Usually I’m not speechless, but I just might be tonight,” she said. “I’m so honored and blessed and I have loved living in the city.”
The shindig she has shepherded in recent years runs from 4 to 10 p.m. on Friday with booths, live music and food concession stands and trucks.
Saturday morning, the Boy Scout Troop 87 pancake breakfast, from 7 to 10 a.m. under a tent in the park, gets things rolling on a full stomach. The Scouts will serve scrambled eggs, French toast, home fries, beans, sausages and beverages, with a choice of regular, chocolate chip or blueberry pancakes for $8, or $5 for those age 10 and younger.
A Together Days volunteer for 40 years, Vinny Nielsen will be the grand marshal of the annual parade. It steps off from the intersection of Bridge and Lincoln streets at 10 a.m., after forming at 8 a.m. Cash prizes are offered for the best decorated floats.
Police will close Bridge Street between Dodge and Brown streets to traffic at 9:30 a.m. The parade route is from Bridge Street to Main Street, ending at the park.
Officers will shut down Main Street from Mechanic Street to Capt. Hartley Drive at 9:50 a.m. until the parade concludes.
An auction named for Leona Glidden at 12:30 p.m. in the park is a highlight with numerous items donated by individuals, groups and businesses. Proceeds benefit scholarships.
Deb Shangraw leads a panel of auction volunteers, drawing praise from Joyce. “She does an amazing job,” Joyce said.
Following a full program packed with live entertainment, fireworks at 9:45 p.m. top off this year’s fest.
Volunteers have been working for months to pull this year’s event together. Joyce said plans for this year’s Together Days got in full gear in January.
Morse said Joyce has served on the City Council and School Committee in addition to volunteering on civic group committees that include My Place Teen Center, Discover Downtown Westbrook, food pantry and Together Days.
