Demosthenes Varipatis

SOUTH PORTLAND – Demosthenes Varipatis of South Portland, Maine died peacefully on May 18, 2025, one week after celebrating his 86th birthday.

Born in the small village of Dafnonas, Greece in 1939, he graduated at the top of his high school class before becoming a police officer. He met his future wife Angela Hatzivalela in the village at a young age and eventually both left Greece in search of a better life in America. They were married at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Portland and enjoyed 58 years of unbreakable love.

Demo worked in construction and Angela taught Greek School at the church they were married in until they saved enough money to open Alpha Delta House of Pizza. Located at the corner of High and Congress in Portland, the store became known for its delicious food and the warm and friendly smiles of its owners. Demo and Angela worked twelve hours a day, six days a week and eventually retired after a highly successful 20 year run.

Demo was a senior member of the AHEPA, which promotes and maintains the Greek culture through education and philanthropy. He was also recently honored for his leadership in Paideia, a group dedicated to promoting the Greek culture in younger generations in America. In his spare time, he enjoyed candlepin bowling and telling jokes in Greek that would make his friends groan.

He was predeceased by his parents Grammatiki and Theodore, and his brothers George and Xenofon. He is survived by his wife Angela; son Theodore, daughter-in-law Beth; grandsons Nicholas and Andrew; his sister Maria; and countless nieces, nephews; and godchildren in the U.S, Greece and Germany.

His funeral will be held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Portland at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 23. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in South Portland.
