Lloyd Russell Pomber

KENNEBUNK – Lloyd Russell Pomber, a resident of Kennebunk, passed away at his home on April 3, 2025. He was 95 years of age.

Lloyd was born in New Bedford, Mass. on May 15, 1929, the son of Anthony Joseph and Rose Lillian Pomber. He grew up in Taunton, Mass. He attended Pine Street Elementary School, Cohannet Grammar School, and Taunton High School. In August 1947, he joined the Air Force and served four years. He served in Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and at Otis Air Force Base in Massachusetts. He was a control tower operator in the service and was honorably discharged in August 1951 as a staff sergeant.

He studied design engineering at SMITT (now Southern Massachusetts University) for two years. When his Korean GI benefits were exhausted, he left school to work for the Standard Oil Corporation as a tool designer. After six months, he went to work for the Aerovox Corporation of New Bedford in the automation division. After one year, he left to work with Cowan Plastic Products Corporation of Providence, R.I., as a product and injection mold designer. During the 10 years he was with Cowan Plastics, he wore several hats. In addition to his design duties, he was involved in sales and eventually became the plant manager. In January 1965, he left Cowan Plastics and went to work for the Morningstar Corporation of Cambridge, Mass. He worked in sales for 11 months, and then in December 1965, he moved to Kennebunk, to open a new factory to produce plastic products. The Morningstar Corporation was reincorporated as the Data Packaging Corporation. Lloyd served as plant manager for three years and became national sales manager of the eight-track cartridge division. He traveled continuously throughout the United States and Canada, introducing and selling the newly designed Data Packaging eight-track cartridge to major music companies. During that first year, he was responsible for sales of $7.5 million.

In 1971, he left Data Packaging Corporation to start a new business. He and Chuck Reid formed the Charles Lloyd Corporation and procured the exclusive rights to sell and build Lindal Cedar Homes in Maine. During the 10 years Lloyd maintained the franchise, over 200 homes were sold. In 1981, Lloyd returned to the plastic business as vice president of sales for the Shape Corporation of Biddeford. Lloyd retired from Shape Incorporated in December of 1995. He continued as a consultant to Shape until April 1997.

Lloyd married Irene Francis of Dighton, Mass., in 1950, and together they had one son, Donald Lloyd Pomber, who sadly passed away in December 2007. In 1968, Lloyd and Irene divorced. He later married Mary Ellen Ronan, but they divorced in 1979.

Lloyd and Mary Ellen had three children together, daughter Nancy, who lives in Bristol, and is married to Nathan Hanna, along with their sons Thomas and Matthew and Nathan’s children Stephen (deceased) and Brynne and her family; daughter Kimberly, of North Yarmouth, who is married to Drew Graham, and their children, Russell, Ellen, and Andrea; and son Joseph Pomber, who resides in Kennebunkport. Lloyd married Marti Blake Hess in October 1989, whom he is survived by. He is also survived by his sister, Audrey Hart of Lancaster, Mass.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; son, Donald; siblings Dorothy, Shirley, Millicent, William, and Richard; and his former wives Irene Coyne and Mary Ellen Pomber.

He was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Lloyd loved being on his sailboat, The Rose. He acquired the boat in 1984 while visiting Annapolis, Md., with Marti. He spent summers sailing with Marti, his children, and friends. After his retirement, he and Marti spent every July and part of August on the boat they kept for several years in Boothbay Harbor and then five years in Rockland Harbor at Journeys End Marina. They sailed and stayed in most of the harbors on Penobscot Bay, in and around Vinalhaven Island, and as far east as Northeast Harbor. The summer of 2009 was spent in Boothbay Harbor at the Boothbay Harbor Marina.

“For though from out our bourne of Time and Place

The flood may bear me far,

I hope to see my Pilot face to face

When I have crossed the bar.”
