CAPE ELIZABETH – Steven Hubbell, 65, of Cape Elizabeth, passed away at Maine Medical Center on March 4, 2025.
He is survived by his wife, Lynda Hubbell; his son, Matthew Hubbell; and his sister, Shaune Zander.
He was born Nov. 25, 1959, in Battle Creek, Mich. to Roger Hubbell and Linda Kwan. He earned a Ph.D in Finance and worked in banking for the entirety of his career, most recently as a Commercial Loan Portfolio Manager for M&T Bank.
Steve was a simple man. He had a knack for teaching economics and loved seeing people grow in their independence and financial grounding and frequently enjoyed riddles. His Jewish faith was very important to him, and attended Congregation Bet Ha’am in South Portland.
Steve was also an avid traveler and loved learning about different parts of the world. He was proud to have visited 49 of the 50 US states–the only one remaining was Hawaii. As an frequent flyer, he spent time in numerous countries throughout Europe and Central America. When it came time for marriage, Lynda asked for an island wedding. As a man that appreciated puns and creating special memories, he suggested Iceland. Lynda and Steve married in Reykjavik, Iceland on March 19, 2001.
He had several medical battles happening concurrently, but he never gave up because he was looking forward to a well-earned retirement continuing to see the world and spread his joy and appreciation for others. God had plans to give him the rest he craved and relief from the battles that lasted far too long.
He will be greatly missed by his family, colleagues, and fellow congregants.
Funeral will be held at Congregation Bet Ha’am, 81 Westbrook St. in South Portland on Friday, March 7 at 1 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to Portland Jewish Funeral Home.
