The Wells Downeaster train station is getting another platform, the latest development in an expansion that will enable Amtrak to offer an additional morning route aimed at commuters in and out of Greater Portland.
Part of the Wells Area Improvement Project, workers will replace the existing platform and build a new platform on the opposite side of the tracks, the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority said in a written statement. Construction began this week.
While Downeaster service will continue through the construction, passengers will be directed to a temporary platform, and traffic in the parking lot will be reorganized, the authority said.
The latest phase of work follows the laying of 6 miles of new track by a contractor for CSX Corp., which was completed last year.
“The additional platform, combined with the added track capacity, will support an additional Downeaster train which will operate between Brunswick and Wells each morning on a schedule designed to serve commuters traveling to and from the Greater Portland Region,” the authority said in its statement.
The authority is still determining a precise start time for that expanded service.
Patricia Quinn, executive director of the rail authority, said the project will “provide more options for Maine residents to get back and forth to work without adding to traffic congestion.”
