South Portland Middle School was evacuated this morning after a strong propane smell was detected, but no leaks were found.

Superintendent Timothy Metheney said the odor was detected in two places inside the school, including the mechanical room, as seventh and eight grade students were arriving for the day between 7:30 and 7:40 a.m.

Students and staff who were already in the building were moved to the Skillin school, while students who were still on buses were briefly taken to the high school.

Unitil and the fire department did not detect any gas leaks and determined the building was safe.

Students were cleared to return by 8:45 a.m. The start of school for fifth and sixth graders was delayed until 10:45 a.m.

“Our administrative team and building and grounds team did a great job in quickly addressing the issue this morning. At all times students were safe,” Matheney said.
