Virginia Anne McNaughton

YARMOUTH – Virginia “Ginny” McNaughton passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Ginny was born in Portland, and spent the first half of her life in the Greater Portland area. She met her first husband, John Monahan Jr., with whom she had two children, John Monahan III and Cynthia “Cindy” Monahan Cogswell.

She had a busy life as a working mom, starting with several years as a teacher aide at Nathan Clifford School. Her lifelong best friend and neighbor Anita Seavey worked alongside her in those early working years. She continued on working as an administrative assistant at Clark Associates, eventually settling with a job she loved at Tucker Anthony & RL Day. She again, being a very likable, high fashion, spirited lady, met several more lifelong friends including her life partner Richard “Dick” McNaughton. They became inseparable. She loved every minute of his very active/accomplished tennis life. They married in 1985 and merged their families bringing together their children who have enjoyed growing together as a wonderful, supportive family unit.

Ginny and Dick continued with retirement together. They owned lovely homes in Naples, Florida, where the kids loved visiting and vacationing with them. With the help of their children and the need to be closer to family, they journeyed back to Maine about six years ago and settled in Yarmouth, at the adorable little cottage on Cousins Island known as “Birchwood”. Peter, Amy and Cindy continued to care for them and make their final years in Maine as happy and comfortable as they could. Everywhere they went they went together and Ginny was never the same once she lost her beloved Dickster. The family is comforted to know they are together again.

Ginny is survived by her loving daughter Cindy Cogswell, Cindy’s two sons, Ryan, his wife Abby and their son, Ginny’s only great-grandchild Lincoln, Thomas Cogswell and his wife Abby; her son John Monahan III and his son John Monahan IV; two sisters, Marjorie Kennedy and Wilma Howe; a brother, William “Bill” Gokey and his wife Susie; two stepsons, Peter McNaughton his wife Amy and two children Lila and Sawyer, David McNaughton his wife Kathryn and two children Connor and Julia. Many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Please join Ginny’s family for a celebration of life reception from 1-3 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A private burial will be held before the Celebration and Reception.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the Compassus Hospice Group, several nurses and aides at Bay Square at Yarmouth for the care of Dick and Ginny the past many months.
