As a teacher and auntie, I believe it is important that we cultivate a more child-friendly Portland. That’s why I support Todd Morse’s candidacy for City Council in District 1. He’s repeatedly highlighted the need for quality pedestrian, cyclist and transit infrastructure. These networks promote children’s developing independence by allowing access to local amenities and nearby friends without needing a ride from caregivers (so long as kids can safely use them). And, in an era of decreasing in-person interaction among children and adolescents, it’s imperative our built environment supports youth autonomy and community.
Morse believes paths and parks should be accessible, well-lit and clear of needles. He’s proposed implementing traffic calming measures, adopting a Vision Zero plan, increasing METRO frequency and advancing the Franklin Street redesign. If elected, I am confident Morse will take these concrete steps towards a streetscape and city where kids can better play, grow and thrive.
