I suspect many are filled with anxiety but also the hope that the worst will not come to pass.

I was not born in America. I lived 20 minutes from the border of a nation whose rulers committed the worst atrocities, with many of its citizens standing by in apathy and silence. Perhaps I never realized how divided Americans are about what their country should look like and many know little and care even less about what happens beyond the edge of their shores.

Another Trump presidency will not only bring catastrophic harm to many of his followers, his daily incoherent, grotesque and threatening presence already bring dread about our future at home, but for so many of us even more so what may lie ahead for Europe.

That more perfect union so cherished by most of us here and abroad may come to an end on Nov. 5.
