A letter writer recently wrote that the Portland City Council was a role model for the nation for its decision to divest from companies doing business with Israel. I have lived in Portland for over 30 years, and I can’t say I agree with that assessment. I have found this specific council short-sighted and divisive on a number of issues, this just being the latest.

The writer mentioned General Dynamics. Motorola Solutions was also on the list, a company that provides much needed communications equipment to fire, law, medical and relief organizations.

I understand the resolution was “symbolic.” Now we are living with the consequences. I think most rational people understand the situation in the Middle East is horrific and sad. The council erred with this resolution.
