Sen. Susan Collins has long masqueraded as a principled moderate. In a Jan. 30, 2022 appearance on ABC-TV, she unmasked herself. Reminded of her own assessment of Donald Trump’s total lacked qualifications needed to serve as president, and asked if she’d support Trump if he runs again in 2024, she declined to answer. She appears to be undecided about his first performance despite the shame it heaped upon the party of Lincoln and the dismay he caused among our allies and near neighbors.

Collins is as responsible for our national gridlock as the dozen or so shameful Republican senators serving on that body’s Judiciary Committee, and her most recent coyness on national television has brought dishonor to every Mainer.

If she hopes to be remembered as a native Maine woman who served her party, state and nation equally well, we’ll retain Margaret Chase Smith and Frances Perkins at the head of that line.
