Your Social Security is on the line this election. In Maine, 95% of retired Mainers 65-plus receive Social Security benefits and more than 360,000 individuals collect Social Security. I hope voters will keep Social Security in mind this election season.
Mainers rely heavily, even entirely, on their Social Security benefits. A recent AARP survey of voters aged 50 and older shows that 90% think that Social Security is very important to people’s financial security in retirement. If Washington doesn’t take action, in 10 years Social Security could be cut by 20%.
A cut to Social Security can have effects no matter your age. It’s time for both parties in Congress to come together and agree on a solution to fix the Social Security shortfall. Let’s ask candidates important questions this election season such as, do you see a path in Congress for a bipartisan solution to protect Social Security?

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
