BALTIMORE — Beau Brieske pitched out of a jam in the ninth inning, Riley Greene drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th and the Detroit Tigers inched closer in the AL wild-card chase by beating the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 on Saturday.
Detroit moved within a half-game of the Twins for the final American League playoff spot. Minnesota’s game at Boston was rained out and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Sunday.
The surging Tigers have won 10 of 13 to put themselves in surprise postseason contention after being under .500 a month ago.
This one almost slipped away when closer Jason Foley allowed consecutive singles, a walk and a double to Gunnar Henderson that tied the score at 4 in the ninth. Detroit manager A.J. Hinch pulled Foley for Brieske (3-4), who induced a groundout, got help with an impressive catch from shortstop Trey Sweeney in shallow left field and ended the threat with a flyout to center.
GIANTS 9, ROYALS 0: LaMonte Wade Jr. and Matt Chapman hit two home runs each, Landen Roupp pitched five scoreless innings for his first major league win, and San Francisco handedthe Royals their sixth straight loss, in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Royals are clinging to the AL’s second wild-card berth. Kansas City’s lead over the Minnesota Twins — who were rained out Saturday — was reduced to a half game. The Tigers are another one half game behind the Twins.
METS 6, PHILLIES 3: Sean Manaea won his fourth straight decision, Brandon Nimmo hit a tiebreaking single in a three-run seventh inning and the Mets beat Philadelphia in New York to prevent the Phillies from clinching the NL East title.
Francisco Alvarez and Luisangel Acuña hit second-inning home runs that put the Mets ahead 2-1. Alvarez added a two-run double in the seventh against Orion Kerkering (5-3) for a 5-2 lead, and Edwin Díaz got a four-out save.
New York (86-69) won for the 17th time in 22 games.
Philadelphia (92-63), which has lost two of the first three games of the four-game series, can secure its first NL East title since 2011 with a victory over the Mets on Sunday night.
BRAVES 6, MARLINS 2: Matt Olson broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run homer and Atlanta won in Miami to stay two games behind the New York Mets for the last National League wild card.
Gio Urshela and Jorge Soler also went deep for the Braves. Marcell Ozuna and Michael Harris II each had three hits.
NATIONALS 5, CUBS 1: MacKenzie Gore struck out nine in seven sparkling innings, and Washington won in Chicago.
REDS 7, PIRATES 1: Elly De La Cruz hit a three-run homer, drove in four runs and scored twice to lead Cincinnati to a victory over the visiting Pirates.
RAYS 3, BLUE JAYS 2: Jonathan Aranda homered for the second consecutive game, helping Taj Bradley and Tampa Bay beat Toronto in St. Petersburg, Florida.
NOTES
METS: Shortstop Francisco Lindor’s earliest return to New York’s lineup from a back injury likely is Tuesday night’s series opener at the Atlanta Braves.
Lindor missed five straight games entering Saturday and had played only one inning in the past seven games.
Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza said Lindor felt better Saturday and hoped to run sprints, hit and take ground balls. Lindor received a numbing injection on Thursday for the facet joints on each side of the spine.
RANGERS: Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer was scratched from his scheduled start, then put on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain that means his season is over.
“Max woke up today, said his hamstring was tight, tight the point where he said he couldn’t go,” Rangers Manager Bruce Bochy said. “Felt it yesterday running some sprints. Just didn’t clear up like he was hoping.”
Scherzer (2-4, 3.95 ERA) has made only one start for the Rangers since July 30. The 40-year-old right-hander was activated from the injured list last Saturday after missing 40 games with right shoulder fatigue and an arm nerve issue in his arm. He struck out six while allowing one run and four hits over four innings.
NATIONALS: All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams was demoted to the minor leagues for a reason not related to his on-field performance and is not expected to play for them the rest of the season.
Nationals Manager Dave Martinez announced the unusual decision before Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
“I just want it to be known, it wasn’t performance-based – it’s an internal issue,” Martinez said. “I’m not going to give specifics or talk about specifics because I need to keep these guys and everything on the down low. I’ve got other guys out there that I want to support. I’m going to support CJ. He’s a big part of our Nats family, and he will be. At this point, for me, it’s the right thing to do.”
Abrams is hitting .246 with 20 homers, 65 RBI and 31 stolen bases.
