SOUTH PARIS – Michael Lee “Snake” Hoyt, 85, of South Paris, formerly of Portland, died Sunday, June 23, 2024 at Market Square Healthcare Center.
He was born in Portland on Oct. 29, 1938, the son of Merton and Alphonsine (Pelletier) Hoyt and attended local schools.
Snake worked as an iron worker on construction sites all over New England. He settled into a job in shipping at Nissen Bakery from where he retired in 1973. He moved to South Paris in 1990 in an effort to escape the city.
He earned the nickname “Snake” from his love of raising various exodic snakes over the years. That love was second, however, to his 50-year membership in the Iron Horsemen motorcycle club. The chapter in Portland was started with eight guys, Snake was the ninth. He also enjoyed working with leather and wood, particularly creating beautiful chess sets.
He is survived by the countless Iron Horsemen brethren scattered all over the country; and a dear friend caregiver, Kristen Reynolds.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 1 at 10 a.m. at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris. Online condolences and tributes may be shared with his family at http://www.chandlerfunerals.com
