Boyd Dean Schlehuber

STANDISH – Boyd Dean Schlehuber, 71, of Standish, died unexpectedly at his home on June 5, 2024. He was born on Aug. 15, 1952 at Presque Isle General Hospital, the son of the late Lynwood Schlehuber and Bettenna Urquhart. Boyd grew up in Presque Isle until the age of 15 when his parents moved the family to Portland.

Boyd attended and graduated from Deering High School in 1970. After graduating high school he attended the University of Southern Maine where he graduated with an associates degree in 1972.

Boyd met his wife and the love of his life Regina “Reggie” in Portland where they lived on the same street and they married on June 10, 1972. They would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary just days after his passing. Boyd and Reggie settled in Standish four years after they were married where they raised their three children, Tara, Jorie and Damon.

Boyd had a very long and successful career in the glass business that spanned more than 40 years. He started his career at Portland Glass and retired from Sigco in August of 2018.

Boyd was a man of many hobbies and interests. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, foraging and riding motorcycles. He loved to work with his hands and made beautiful furniture and other homemade gifts for the people that he loved. A little known fact about Boyd was that he was a very talented poet and had written many poems over the years that he kept tucked away and shared with very few people. He was an extremely kind and thoughtful man and he loved all the people in his life deeply. He will be most remembered for his warm smile, kind eyes, hardy laugh, dry sense of humor and his mischievous ways.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Armond Schlehuber; and his daughter, Jorie Schlehuber.

He is survived by his wife, Regina Schlehuber of Standish; daughter, Tara Schlehuber-Johnson and husband Lance of Buxton, son, Damon Schlehuber and his wife Jamie of Standish; sister, Malee Blanchard and her husband Donald, brother, Harland Schlehuber and his wife Chris, sister, Lynnann Marcroft and her husband James; four grandchildren, Michaela Cost, Hannah Burgess, Isaiah Brisbane and Darius Tatum; one great-grandchild, Leighton Cost; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the first responders of the Standish Fire and Emergency Services Department for their great efforts and kindness and care that they displayed in such a difficult moment. We will forever be grateful to all of you.

A celebration of life for Boyd will be announced to family and friends at a later date.

“My world began one warm spring day
When winter lost it’s hold
I appeared atop the tallest tree
And was summoned to unfold

Firmly tethered to a branch
I struggled to break free
But as I checked around my world
There were many just like me

For months we bathed in summer rain
And danced upon the wind
As summer waned and nights grew cold
It sparked a change within

We are all changing now to brilliant reds and gold
Painting autumns canvas sky
with beauty to behold

My friends are all leaving now
Gone to who knows where
Some just drop and disappear
Or sail into the air

Nature Came to call again
We first met at my birth
It’s friend the wind has set me free
And delivered me to earth”
