AUGUSTA — With sales and income taxes coming in ahead of projections in May, Maine revenues were $48 million ahead of projections, setting the stage for a year-ending surplus in the $50 million range at the end of June.

Sales and use taxes were $5.5 million over budget in May, while individual income taxes came in $12 million over budget.

Finance Commissioner Ryan Low says he expects to see fiscal 2010 end June 30 with state books $50 million in the black. But his May revenue report says that despite signs of a national economic recovery, unemployment remains a problem and will hamper a recovery.

Maine’s budget has been battered by the reeling economy over the last couple of years, resulting in deep cuts in state programs and services.
