STANDISH — Junior Kayla Merrill pitched a two-hitter and also drove in three runs as Telstar High won the Class C softball state championship by beating George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill 5-1 Saturday afternoon at St. Joseph’s College’s Ward Field.

Merrill’s two-run single with one out in the third broke a scoreless tie. She added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

She was in control throughout as a pitcher, allowing only singles in the second and sixth innings. She struck out nine and walked only one. After the Rebels got the lead in the third, she allowed only one base runner over the final four innings.

“She’s the total package,” said Telstar coach Jim Lunney. “She pitched well and she hit well.”

The Rebels, who lost in last year’s state title game, finished 18-0 for the school’s third state championship overall.

“We wanted to come back and win this because of last year,” said Merrill.

The Eagles finished 14-6.
