Roy Lee Hilburn

FALMOUTH – Roy Lee Hilburn, 94, died Sept. 26, 2023. Born in Oklahoma on Nov. 7, 1928, he lived for the past 19 years at Oceanview in Falmouth. Prior to that, he and his late wife, Emily, lived in Florida and North Carolina.

Roy was a math teacher, a dance instructor, and a square dance caller. He was also Director of the Maine Sailing School in Bayside in the 1960s and worked for the Job Corps in Glasgow, Mont., and Poland Springs.

In retirement, he and Emily hiked the Appalachian Trail, sailed the Intracoastal Waterway, and toured the country in an RV. They raised their family in California, Vermont, Ohio, Montana, and Maine.

He is survived by, as he liked to put it, four fine children; two high-quality grandchildren; and two exceptional great-grandchildren. With happy memories and his famous folk sing-alongs echoing in their heads, he is greatly missed by his children, Steve, Dan (Lucy), Jeff, and Linda Swift; his granddaughters Alison Olson (Mike) and Caroline Elliott (Grant); and his great-grandchildren, Owen and Zoey Olson.

His family plans a private family gathering and celebration of life at his request.
