PORTER — A local man threatening people with a sword was arrested Thursday evening without incident at his residence on Colcord Pond Road in this southern Oxford County town.
Derek Redgate, 41, was charged by Maine State Police with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and creating a police standoff, Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said.
Police were called to the residence at 5:24 p.m. Thursday for a report of an intoxicated person who had assaulted an occupant of the home and was waving a sword threatening another person. Both escaped from the home, leaving Redgate alone inside, Moss said.
As troopers were investigating, Redgate came outside twice waving his sword then went back inside and barricaded himself, Moss said.
The State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded and spoke with Redgate for several hours before he surrendered about 9:26 p.m.
Redgate was taken to a hospital before being transported to the Oxford County Jail in Paris, Moss said.
Members of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and the York County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
