SUMNER — A barn burned on River Road Wednesday afternoon but fire crews saved several other buildings from going up in flames.

The first call came in at about 4 p.m. when it was reported that a 20-by-30-foot barn was fully engulfed in flames at 76 River Road and that the siding on the nearby mobile home was melting.

As more crews were called to the scene, flames were threatening two other buildings, a shed and a stable, as well, according to Sumner Fire Chief Doug Fournier.

Although the barn was destroyed by flames, crews were able to save the mobile home, shed and stable, some of which were singed by flames.

Additional fire crews assisted from several area towns, including Paris, West Paris, Buckfield, Canton and Turner. Firefighters from Norway and Woodstock were enlisted to help a short time later.

Nobody was hurt as crews battled flames in near 90 degree heat.

“We had plenty of manpower,” Fournier said.

River Road runs along the West Branch of the Nezinscot River between Route 219 and North Buckfield Road.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation. The name of the family who lives in the mobile home was not immediately available. No one from the home was hurt.
