BOOTHBAY — A Jefferson man died Monday night in Boothbay after the sedan he was driving struck a tree off River Road.
Gregory D. Fetner, 41, had been traveling east on the road that roughly parallels the Damariscotta River when he lost control of the vehicle as it crested a knoll, according to a news release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Fetner’s car — a 2017 Ford Focus — then crossed into the opposing lane of traffic, went off the roadway and crashed into a large tree.
Speed was a factor in the crash, according to a preliminary investigation by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The agency will continue to investigate the incident.
Fetner, who was the only person in the vehicle, was wearing a seatbelt at the time. Officials said Fetner owned the car, which was registered in New Hampshire.
The crash took place around 5:39 p.m. on Monday.
Anyone who witnessed or has information related to the crash is asked to contact Sgt. Scott Hayden, who is leading the investigation, or Lt. Brendan Kane at 207-882-7332 or bkane@lincolnso.me.
