Maine State Police are investigating after a woman’s body was found in a ditch in a small town on Mount Desert Island on Sunday morning.
Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a news release that a passerby in Southwest Harbor called 911 around 11:30 a.m. after noticing the woman’s body in the vicinity of 61 Main Street.
Police shut the road down, and traffic was being detoured around the town Sunday. Officials said Main Street would remain closed while the investigation by the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and Southwest Harbor police continues.
Authorities ask that anyone who noticed anything suspicious in that area between Saturday night and Sunday morning call state police at 207-973-3700.
Moss said the woman’s body would be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was scheduled to be conducted Monday morning.
Southwest Harbor is small town on Mount Desert Island with a population of about 1,700 people.
