Ann “Sunny” Murray Mason
GORHAM – Ann “Sunny” Murray Mason, 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Gorham, on Saturday, April 29, 2023, with her family at her side. She was a beautiful, kind and compassionate individual with a heart of gold.
Sunny was born in Westbrook on August 4, 1944, a daughter of Richard Wentworth Murray and Alta Maria Elkins Murray. She lived her earlier years in Cape Elizabeth until her family moved to Gorham. She was educated by the Gorham Schools graduating from Gorham High School in 1962. Sunny then attended the University of Maine, Orono, earning a Bachelor of Art in Mathematics with highest distinction. While at the University, she was elected as a member of Phi Kappa Phi in 1965 and Phi Beta Kappa in 1966. She then went on to obtain a Master of Science in Education in 1978 at University of Southern Maine. After her studies, Sunny became a mathematics teacher at Westbrook High School where she taught for many years. She typically taught geometry and consumer math and always expected the best from her students.
While studying in Orono, Sunny married (Philip) Craig Mason on Sunday, August 16, 1964 by Reverend Harrison W. Dubbs at the Congregational Church in Gorham. It was a wonderful day with a reception following at her parents’ home. After living for a few years in Stillwater, Carmel and Westbrook, the somewhat newlywed couple purchased a 60-acre farm in the northwest corner of Gorham. With a large garden, a lot of canning and a few animals, they were able to produce most of what the family needed. For years, they sold milk, butter and eggs at the door to help offset the cost of grain.
Sunny enjoyed sewing, making her own wedding dress and her attendants’ dresses during the summer of 1964. Drawing and dancing were special pleasures as was traveling to visit children and grandchildren. Despite always preferring to be outside, she did what needed to be done to keep the house in order.
Sunny is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Craig; her children, Philip Wayne Mason, Rebecca Ann Mason Yang and her husband, Roger Yang, and Hugh Crague Mason and his significant other, Carol Daigle. She was blessed by five grandchildren, Kaitlin Mason, Caroline Mason, Zackary Yang, Zoey Yang and Chloe Mason. Also surviving is sister, Beth Murray Libby. She was predeceased by her parents; and her sister, Rita Murray Loubier.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Rd, Casco, immediately followed by a Service of Interment at Arlington Cemetery, 720 Roosevelt Trail, North Windham, for all those who wish to attend.
